"What the pirates didn't expect was that, in the darkness, the crew would fire back."   This past weekend saw a potential major shift in both tactics and precedent.  Will the pirates escalate their tactics as a result.

MSC cruise lines hired a Israeli security force for ship security, and on 26 April after being fired on by a Somali pirates over 500 miles off the coast, the security force fire back with handguns and fire hoses.  The pirates retreated and the ship was later escorted by a Spanish Frigate to its next port.

Previously, when cruise lines were threatened they were able to outrun the slower pirate boats.  I did not read whether that was tried and didn't work or not.

What do you think?  Should Cruise ships carry weapons?  Is it a dangerous precedent that MSC has now set?  How will the pirates react or respond?
