The first Oktoberfest was held to celebrate the marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig I to Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 17, 1810.  The festivities were held in the fields in front of the castle gates which were later renamed Theresienwiese (Theresa's meadow) in honor of the Crown Princess.  Horse races in the presence of the royal family closed the events, and it was the decision to repeat these races that sparked the Oktoberfest tradition.  The following year and years subsequent an agricultural show was added, and Oktoberfest expanded from a celebration and time for camaraderie to also be a time to give thanks for the year's harvest.  203 years later these traditions continue in Vienna, VA and all across the world.
